Are you in search of a cost-effective replacement for your manually operated office doors? Then, installing automatic security gates is the best option for you. You will have absolute control over the gates and will be able to track accurate attendance records of your employees. However, there are certain things you need to consider when you are going to buy security gates to safeguard your office property. Let's take a look at them:
  • First and foremost, you need to focus on the material of the door you are going to buy. Generally, you will find gates made of timber and metal. There is a wide range of security doors of different shapes and sizes. You need to choose one based on your requirements.
  • Security gates are not expensive, but they do vary in prices. Which is why, you need to consider how much you can spend. Remember, when it comes to protecting your office property and preventing intruders or burglars, you should get nothing but the best products. You might have to pay a little more than what ordinary security gates costs, but the safety, convenience, and peace of mind you will get are worth it.
  • Get in touch with a company that offers a wide range of access control features along with the security gates. Make sure you are going to install a security gate that comes with these features:

  • Fob readers: Gone are the days when people used to secure their valuables using locks and old-fashioned metal keys. Carrying key chains can be inconvenient and may feel bulky in your purse or pocket. Fob readers are the best way you can avoid all these problems and secure your office effectively.
  • Biometric scanners (fingerprint readers): With this security feature, you don't have to give your employees id cards and magnetic badges that are costly and difficult to manage. This will help you authenticate the access of your employees and track their attendance history effectively, and conveniently.
  • Audio video intercoms: This can be ideal for places where there are no reception areas. Moreover, you don't need to keep a security guard to guard the main door of your office. Advanced audio and video intercoms are one of the best ways you can deal with your visitors and appointment holders.

Now you know some important aspects you need to look for when you are buying security gates. Southampton is a place where people prefer to secure their properties by installing such gates.

  • Security gates Southampton - Do you want to buy high quality security gates? Southampton based Openings should be your ultimate preference. They provide quality security gate installation for your property.

(AP) ? San Francisco, the city that regulated Happy Meal toys and banned plastic grocery bags, has a new target in its health-conscious, eco-friendly crosshairs: plastic water bottles.

City officials are considering an ordinance that would require owners of new and renovated buildings with water fountains to install special bottle-filling taps. The law's designed to encourage thirsty people to refill containers instead of reaching for another bottle of Evian or Aquafina.

"This is the appropriate next step to make it easier for San Franciscans to get out of the bad habit of using environmentally wasteful plastic water bottles and into the good habit of using reusable water containers," said Board of Supervisors President David Chiu, who introduced the legislation in June.

Bottle-filling taps like the ones that would be required if Chiu's measure passes already are found at San Francisco International Airport and at some city parks and schools. Installed behind a drinking fountain's regular faucet, they dispense chilled water in a quick-streaming vertical jet that is high enough to accommodate most water containers.

Advocates say having bottle-specific spigots encourages the reuse of water bottles by eliminating long waits to fill them and removing concerns about germs. Some people squirm at the thought of drinking from a fountain exposed to so many mouths, although city officials say water fountains are no less hygienic than bottle taps.

Skeptics question whether the ordinance is necessary, since the proposed taps pour the same highly-regarded public water that comes out of every other faucet and drinking fountain. Businesses often complain that San Francisco lawmakers are too quick to impose bans or restrictions that affect their bottom lines.

"If you are in an office, your kitchen has a sink, the sink has a faucet and that faucet puts out Hetch Hetchy (reservoir) water," San Francisco Building Owners and Managers Association representative Ken Cleaveland said. "It's just one more new law that San Francisco is implementing on top of hundreds of other laws to make, rather force, compliance in sustainable practices."

Despite initial skepticism, the association is waiting for more details before taking a stance on the law

Adding a bottled-water spigot to existing water fountains would cost at least around $750, according to manufacturers.

For officials at Pennsylvania State University, the cost has been worthwhile. The university is now installing taps on all its campuses after experimenting with them for three years, said Lydia Vandenbergh, an official overseeing the university's effort to reduce use of plastic water bottles. Students were more receptive to filling bottles from special taps than drinking fountains, thought to be dirty.

"In the era of hyper hygiene, for a lot of people, that's a barrier," Vandenbergh said. University officials have estimated the busiest tap replaces the equivalent of 35,000 plastic bottles a month.

Chiu's ordinance calls plastic water bottles "bad for the environment," unnecessarily taking up landfill space and causing greenhouse gas emissions when cheap tap water is available. San Francisco city departments have been barred from buying plastic water bottles since 2007.

Chiu said he considered other aggressive measures to curb the bottle, including a fee and an outright ban. The proposed ordinance is less severe and is meant to raise awareness about drinking tap water as an alternative, he said.

Environmental groups are supportive of efforts to wean San Franciscans from plastic water bottles.

"San Francisco has among the best drinking water in country. It's ridiculous that people would go out and spend their now very limited dollars to buy bottled water," said Mae Wu, an attorney with the National Resources Defense Council.

Chris Hogan, an International Bottled Water Association spokesman, said his industry contributes a small fraction of worldwide energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. He welcomed efforts to encourage drinking tap water, but said they don't require demonizing bottled water.

"When you make the argument to discourage people from drinking bottled water, you are removing the healthiest option when it comes to choosing a bottled beverage," Hogan said.

Chiu introduced the ordinance at a board of supervisors meeting on June 26. It is expected to go before the supervisors' Land Use and Economic Development Committee in September and if it passes, on to the full board of supervisors.

Different ways to Alcohol Detox at your home | ArticlePDQ.com

Detoxing from alcohol is a big step in any addict?s lifespan. A lot of people who would like to detox from alcohol choose to get assistance at a treatment facility. However, alcohol detox at home is also a choice for many people.

    How to proceed During Detox

Before you choose to begin the detoxification course of action, you should meet with a physician. Talking to a doctor is critical before you begin any at-home detox program because the seriousness of your addiction has to be assessed. If your alcohol obsession is too serious, you may need professional help at a rehabilitation center. However, if the medical doctor ascertains that your addiction can be handled at your home, you can start the detoxification process yourself.

As soon as you start the detoxification process, get plenty of fluids. Water will not only cleanse your system, but will also help reduce any withdrawal signs you may encounter. During detoxification, you should also eat a healthy diet complete with vegatables and fruits. You do not want to become dehydrated during detox. By ingesting water and eating fruits and vegetables, you replenish the water in your body that you generally lose during detox.

During your detox, try to slowly add physical exercise to your every day routine. Exercise will help ease depression that is frequently connected with detox, but it can also help flush the alcohol from your body.

The Benefits of Detoxing at Home

For many individuals, one benefit of alcohol detox at home is privacy. When you detox at home, you do not have to stress about people bothering you or feeling bogged down by others throughout your program.

Detoxing at home is normally less expensive than enrolling in a treatment center, which is a huge benefit for individuals who may not have the money to check in to a treatment center.

The Risks Associated with Detoxing at Home

Detoxing at home is not for everybody. Sometimes, if you are severely addicted to alcohol, detoxing at home can be a health risk because you might not be able to cease drinking all at once. Rather, you may need a plan where alcohol is slowly removed from your diet. Normally, a physician will have to monitor your development during this type of program.

With any sort of detox process, you might have an adverse reaction. Detoxification is basically removing harmful toxins and poisons from your system. However, not every person reacts the same way during detox. While a single person may be fine during detox, someone else may become sick.

While there are many benefits associated with alcohol detox at home, there are also risks. It is really important to stay in contact with your physician when you are detoxing to ensure that you can get help if you need it.

Icahn issues new warning to board of Forest Labs

(Reuters) - Activist investor Carl Icahn stepped up pressure on Forest Laboratories Inc on Thursday, warning that time was running out for it to accept his nominees to the company's board of directors.

Icahn appealed to Forest's non-management board members, saying his attempts to reach an amicable agreement with Chairman and Chief Executive Howard Solomon had fallen on deaf ears. The company's annual meeting is set for August 15. It recently cut its profit forecast to earnings of 65-80 cents a share for the fiscal year ending in March 2013, down about 80 percent from a year earlier.

"I am concerned that we are reaching a precipice in this proxy contest from which an amicable solution is no longer possible," Icahn wrote, "and while I believe I will prevail in this proxy contest, the one thing that Howard Solomon and I do agree on, is that we both believe that an amicable solution would best serve all shareholders."

Icahn's letter asked whether Solomon had informed the board of his discussions with Icahn.

"Perhaps you were not informed by Howard Solomon (although he stated otherwise) that before putting together a slate I sought to avoid a proxy context by having you add Eric Ende and Daniel Ninivaggi to the Board, both very well qualified individuals," he wrote.

Ende is a former Merrill Lynch biotechnology analyst while Ninivaggi is president of Icahn Enterprises.

A spokeswoman for Forest said that any suggestion that the board had not been fully informed of Solomon's discussions with Icahn is "categorically false."

"The Board is fully engaged in the entire process and does not believe that Icahn's insistence on nominating two individuals paid by him, either directly or under a profit-sharing arrangement, is in the best interest of all shareholders."

Icahn is Forest's second-largest shareholder, with a stake of about 10 percent. He has nominated four directors to Forest's board, after having failed to win a battle for seats last year.

Icahn said in his letter that after Solomon rejected his proposal to replace two board members, he suggested adding his candidates without removing any existing members. That too was rejected, he said.

"If you are true in your belief that a prolonged proxy contest would be deleterious to Forest (as I am), how can you be so hastily dismissive?" he wrote.

Icahn maintains that Forest is at a "critical crossroads" and that the board has allowed management to rely on two products: antidepressant Lexapro, which has lost market exclusivity, and Alzheimer's drug Namenda, which is set to lose it in 2015, opening the way for generic competition.

"I doubt, along with many analysts, that the current pipeline will be sufficient to pick up the slack," he said.

    FIGHT OVER SUCCESSION

Icahn has also taken aim at 84-year-old Solomon's succession plans, saying he is preparing to install his son David Solomon as CEO without a proper review. Forest said it has hired executive search firm Spencer Stuart to find a successor to Solomon.

Howard Solomon defended the record of his son, who serves as senior vice president of corporate development and strategic planning. He also pointed to the role of Icahn's son Brett in executive positions within Icahn's own organization as well as on the boards of public companies.

At an investor meeting last month, Solomon touted products expected to fill the gaps left by Lexapro and Namenda, including five drugs that have been recently approved for conditions including depression, fibromyalgia and high blood pressure.

The company awaits approval for drugs to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and irritable bowel syndrome, and expects to submit applications for a new antidepressant and an antipsychotic this year.

Icahn in his letter boasted of his success in increasing the share prices of biotechnology companies he has been involved with over the past five or six years, including ImClone Systems, which was sold to Eli Lilly & Co in 2008 for $6.5 billion; Biogen Idec Inc, whose shares soared after Icahn's representatives helped engineer a turnaround; and Genzyme Corp, which was sold to Sanofi SA for $20 billion.

But Icahn has lost his former lieutenant in the biotech sphere - Alexander Denner, who is setting up a hedge fund of his own. By most accounts Denner, who has a background in science and investment management, was instrumental in generating more than $2 billion in profit from Icahn's biotech investments.

Ninivaggi received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago and a law degree from Stanford University. Forest claims that Ende, a physician and former analyst, won fewer votes than any of the 14 board nominees during last year's contest.

Whether Icahn will see the same kind of success with Forest as with other biotech companies remains to be seen. In the meantime, his determination is clear.

"I know several of you have known Howard Solomon for many, many years," Icahn wrote to the directors. "Do not let your personal relationship with Howard Solomon get in the way of what is right for the company and what your fiduciary duties require you to do. Time is running short."

Exclusive: U.S. probing failed broker PFGBest's use of small auditor

WASHINGTON/CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. futures industry investigators are looking into why Iowa-based collapsed brokerage PFGBest used a tiny accounting firm that appears to be operating from inside a suburban Chicago home to audit its books, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Experts said the use of such an auditor should have been a red flag to regulators of a futures brokerage with more than $500 million in assets and several hundred employees across the United States as well as in Shanghai and Canada.

There are comparisons with the way convicted Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff used an auditor operating out of a strip mall in suburban New York and convicted swindler Allen Stanford's investment firm retained a little-known auditor on the Caribbean island of Antigua.

PFGBest's financial statement ended December 31, 2010, shows that a firm called Veraja-Snelling Company, based in Glendale Heights, Illinois, certified that the futures broker was in compliance with federal commodities regulations governing the segregation of customer money.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission accused the now-bankrupt brokerage and its founder Russell Wasendorf Sr. of misappropriating roughly $200 million of customer money in a fraud it said dates back to at least February 2010, and then lying to cover it up.

The alleged fraud came to light after Wasendorf's apparent suicide attempt on Monday morning outside the firm's Cedar Falls, Iowa, offices.

The CFTC is looking into the role of the auditor as it continues to investigate PFGBest, said the person familiar with the matter, who was not authorized to speak publicly.

When reached at her Glendale Heights home on Tuesday night, Jeannie Veraja-Snelling, who listed herself an officer of the firm when she registered with the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board in February 2010, said she could not talk about PFGBest.

"I don't know what's going on. I just found about it all an hour ago so I can't talk about it," said Veraja-Snelling, appearing distraught.

A PFGBest spokeswoman did not return a call seeking comment.

Another source told Reuters on Tuesday that Wasendorf went to great lengths to fabricate PFGBest's financials, saying he intercepted confidential regulatory documents that were mailed by the National Futures Association to what the industry self-regulatory group believed was U.S. Bank, the bank used by PFGBest.

Instead, the NFA was sending the documents, used to independently verify a broker's bank balances, to a post office box that Wasendorf had set up, the source said.

In the 2010 report, Veraja-Snelling & Co wrote that there were no material weaknesses involving internal controls and that the "corporation's practices and procedures were adequate."

The NFA confirmed that the accounting firm, which has no disciplinary history with Illinois financial regulators and has not been accused of any wrongdoing, also audited PFGBest's 2011 financial statements.

It was not clear if it was still PFGBest's auditor at the time of its bankruptcy filing on Tuesday.

An NFA representative declined to comment further. A CFTC spokesman did not have an immediate comment.

    HOME BUSINESS

Veraja-Snelling & Co is located on a busy, four-lane street inside a modest house, that is a faded-pink color, in Glendale Heights, some 30 minutes outside of Chicago.

Jeannie Veraja-Snelling has been certified in the state of Illinois since 1999.

However, she does not list having any public company clients in her 2011 annual filing with the PCAOB.

On Tuesday night, she came to the door wearing a green sleeveless shirt and blue denim shorts. A stack of cardboard filing boxes was sitting just inside the door.

She declined to answer questions about how she came to be retained by PFGBest. She did not respond to a follow-up e-mail and voice mails asking questions.

Little information appears to be publicly available about Veraja-Snelling.

According to online records submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the firm audited some broker-dealers, including Best Direct Securities, LLC, which is owned by PFGBest, for the year ending December 31, 2009.

The online records also indicate Veraja-Snelling has audited other small-sized securities brokers, such as Chicago-based Arclight Securities LLC for its 2007 financial statement, and Corporate Investments Group over several years, including 2011.

Audit experts say that just because PFGBest hired a small auditor to do its books does not necessarily say anything about the auditor's competence.

Instead, they said, it speaks more to the management of PFGBest and why the firm did not pick a larger auditor with a more established reputation.

"Typically if you are in a business like this, you want to have people have confidence in your numbers and feel like you have got a big name behind them," said Lynn Turner, a former chief accountant for the SEC.

The failure of regulators at the NFA to notice some of the red flags, they added, is also troubling.

"You would think that a regulator would notice this and that should trigger much higher scrutiny," said Tom Selling, who writes an accounting blog called the Accounting Onion. "There's no question that the regulator's protocol should take that into account, especially a sole practitioner."

    INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

Experts say it is not common for the CFTC to bring actions against auditors, but it is not unprecedented.

In September of last year, the CFTC charged the national accounting firm McGladrey & Pullen and its partner David Shane with issuing an unqualified audit opinion on futures brokerage One World Capital Group.

At the time the case was filed, David Meister, the head of CFTC enforcement, stated that "the commission will not hesitate to impose significant sanctions on auditing firms and hold individuals personally responsible when they fail to adhere to their professional obligations."

The company and the audit partner settled the CFTC's case without admitting or denying the charges. The firm agreed to pay $900,000, and Shane paid $100,000.

Another potential regulatory body that could look into the situation is the PCAOB, which gained new authority under the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform law to inspect auditors of broker-dealers.

A PCAOB spokeswoman declined to say if Veraja-Snelling had been inspected under the new program, or whether the PCAOB will investigate the firm in light of the alleged fraud at PFGBest.

Joseph Carcello, a professor at the University of Tennessee, said the PCAOB has limited resources but may look into PFGBest's audits because of the publicity around the case.

"It has some echoes of Madoff ... I'd be shocked if they don't think about it," he said.

The ?Sustainability? Paradox?Interview with Paul Ehrlich

While the term ?sustainability??and the values it implies have gone mainstream, global atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide yet continue to rise, as do per-capita consumptions rates in developed and developing counties. ?Consumer cultures? in places like the U.S. apparently die hard. Meanwhile, a warming planet dissolves ecosystems and life-sustaining natural cycles and resources like sugar cubes in a pressurized teapot.

Dr. Paul Ehrlich of Stanford University and colleagues both at the University and representing the Nature Conservancy in Seattle, Washington, imparted wise words and inconvenient truths alike on the state of our planet in a recent Nature article published in a June 2012 issue dedicated to the Rio Earth summit and ?second chances? for Earth. Citing the words of U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, the article started out thus: ?? We believed in consumption with consequences. Those days are gone? Over time, that model is a recipe for national disaster. It is a global suicide pact.?

Agricultural soils are being destroyed in a tenth of the time that it took to form them. Water in aquifers is being pumped out much faster that it is being recharged. The animals, plants and other organisms that run our life support systems for us are being destroyed at unprecedented rates, in what is essentially the sixth large extinction in 65 million years.

I interviewed Dr. Ehrlich for this article on the paradox of sustainability.

?You can?t negotiate with the environment,? Ehrlich said. ?A standard footprint analysis shows that if you want to be sustainable with the kind of civilization we have now ? that is with seven billion people, about a billion of them hungry and about another two billion living more or less in misery ? you have to have one and a half Earths.?

According to Ehrlich, humans are not living on the interest from Earth?s natural capital, but rather on the capital itself. We can?t change the physics of climate and the laws of nature, he points out, but we can change our social and economic systems.

?Climate change may very well not be the worst of the problems we are facing,? Ehrlich said. ?There is no significant dispute in the scientific community that the climate is changing, that humanity is playing a very large role in that change, and that it threatens to destroy our civilization. But on the other hand, the toxic chemicals that we are distributing from pole to pole may turn out to be a worse problem, as could be the epidemiological environment, which grows worse and worse as our population grows and we get more and more immune compromised. And the resource wars that we are already involved in could easily escalate.?

Ehrlich and his colleagues at Stanford University and beyond have offered up their own vision of a sustainable future and how to get there.? They propose an interwoven web of goals including population rescaling, social equity across gender, and buffering against global shock waves through resilience and natural capital planning. According to Ehrlich, the currently limited reach of sustainability is just as much a problem of governance as it is a problem of environmental and technological constraints.

?The destruction of agricultural, water, and ecosystem resources ? these things are well known in the scientific community,? Ehrlich said. ?But if you followed the debates among the seven dwarfs running for the Republican nomination for President, no single serious problem here was even mentioned in those debates. That is why we need dramatic social change. The scientific community knows what sorts of things we ought to be doing to solve these problems, but we aren?t doing any of them.?

    Depleting Natural Resources

The marshy wetlands of the Atchafalaya Basin in south central Louisiana are an example of natural capital that is in peril from oil-pumping and industrial forces of society. These wetlands are some of the largest natural carbon sinks in the world, sequestering excess carbon dioxide that would otherwise drive further climatic warming. These wetlands and the cypress trees that populate them, as shown here, act to naturally protect the coastline from erosion and hurricane damage, to store and convey floodwaters, and to absorb sediments and contaminants. Destroying these wetlands in the name of industrial progress and oil resources has serious consequences for local ecosystems. 80% of U.S. coastal land loss is occurring in Louisiana, with the state losing the equivalent of one football field every 30-60 minutes due largely to human disturbance. Image ? by Paige Brown, @FromTheLabBench.

The production of natural goods and water, water purification, marshland-based coastal protection, insect-driven crop pollination, cultural benefits (who isn?t inspired by nature and our recreation in it?), preservation of genetic diversity: these are just a few of the services that our planet provides us with. But more than half of these services are now in a troubling state of decline. Perhaps even more troubling, declining natural capital and pressures on Earth?s capacity to support human activity are inappropriately concentrated in the poorest regions of the world.

An inequality of environmental services leaves the inhabitants of poor and developing countries most vulnerable to natural disasters ??many of which, ironically, are being increasingly precipitated by climatic warming environmental degradation forces exerted by the richest of nations. For example, highly damaging tropical cyclones look to become more frequent as ocean waters warm, posing risks to coastal inhabitants who have limited resources available for protection and or evacuation. These cyclones may do more damage in the future than they do today as land subsidence in the Gulf Coast, for example, is precipitated by pumping the land for oil and developing storm-protective wetlands for agricultural and residential purposes.

Ehrlich draws attention to ecosystem science, tools and decision-making approaches based on natural capital evaluation. He and his colleagues support an integration of natural capital into land use and other resource decisions on a large scale. As a society, especially here in the U.S., we tend to undervalue the natural capital and ecosystem services that sustain our way of life. Under an umbrella goal of harmonizing people and nature by securing critical natural capital, Ehrlich and other environmental researchers support efforts to sequester carbon from the atmosphere, conserve water sources and supplies, control flooding, protect coastlines, and enhance scenic beauty.

Meanwhile, it is now taking more and more energy to secure less and less resources.

?We are now chasing after the scarcest, most depleted, most dangerous resources,? Ehrlich said.

When the first oil well in the United States started at the surface of the ground and went down 70 feet, it hit oil. More recently, the Deepwater Horizon oil well started under a mile of water and had to go down roughly two miles to hit oil. Today, the move toward Artic resources promises to take even more energy to secure hard-to-reach resources, and to pose even greater risks to oil drilling personnel and local wildlife.

?Probably the best single measure for how much destruction we are doing is humanity?s level of energy use,? Ehrlich said. ?People don?t understand what is described as the nonlinearities associated with population growth. If the projections turn out to be correct, we are going to add 2.5 billion more people to the Earth by 2050, and those 2.5 billion are going to do much more damage than the last 2.5 billion, because human beings are smart. We picked the low hanging fruit first. We didn?t start farming in the river valleys, and now every person that you add has to be fit for worse and worse land.?

While reducing our per capita consumption, we also need to be preserving critical areas of ecosystem services for future generations. You wouldn?t jam up your only fresh water well to build up a parking lot. But that is essentially what goes on in many places all over our planet. Natural resources are often wasted in the name of urban and commercial progress.

    Global Shocks Waves

Not only are natural resources being depleted rapidly on a worldwide basis, but environmental degradation in one region of the world can easily affect inhabitants in other regions, in what Ehrlich terms global shock waves.

Climate change is, among other things, melting glaciers around the planet, which has serious consequences for the availability of water for agricultural operations. This is the case in the Himalayan water tower, or the ice and the snow of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau.

?As the ice and snow melts more ? and it will certainly melt more ?the flow of rivers in South Asia is going to be restricted during the growing season,? Ehrlich said. ?Same as in California. You may get just as much precipitation during the year as you always had, but if water isn?t stored up there as snow, then the water will run off during the winter when it can?t be used for farming. Then in the farming season, you will be short of water.?

Water shortages could become the source of armed conflict between nations suffering from droughts and limited water supplies.

?Recent research shows that a nuclear war between two small countries could easily bring down civilization through both its ecological and economic impacts,? Ehrlich said. ?So people think that they are isolated from these impacts, but we are really not isolated.?

Contagious diseases such as the bird flu, which may become more prevalent as warmer environmental conditions foster their development and spread, are another example of the dangers of a globally connected society in an age of environmental degradation. Meanwhile, societies around the world are not prepared to deal with the spread of contagious disease on a global level.

?Our global connectedness means that the way farmers combine ducks and chickens and pigs overseas could easily affect the lives of people in the US,? Ehrlichsaid. ?We have problems that are truly global, but we have no governing system that allows us to operate globally.?

Fixing the Problem ? What is it Going to Take?

Ehrlich and colleagues suggest potential fixes for the sustainability paradox, but as always these fixes are not simple and require cooperation and effective communications on a large scale. Ehrlich argues for equality of women as important players in environmental protection in developing nations

?I think women are absolutely essential to sustainability in a series of dimensions,?? Ehrlich said. ?The most obvious one, and the one that is widely recognized in the scientific community, is that if you give women full rights, same as men, equal pay, equal opportunities, then you can expect that their birth rate will drop rather dramatically.?

Ehrlich and colleagues point to the paramount importance of social justice, education and communication in fostering environmental awareness. Global warming mitigation and environmental protection are perhaps more intimately connected with the human condition than they are with our planet?s physical one.

?We have the potential to educate the entire public about what is actually going on in the world, but we aren?t doing it,? Ehrlich said. ?For example, we should start teaching about the environment in kindergarten. Instead of saying ?See Scott Run,? we should say ?See the Plant Grow in the Sun,? to start making the connection to photosynthesis. The average faculty member at a major university couldn?t give you a coherent story about how we know that there is a huge human factor in the climate impact story, because we don?t train people that way.?

    Communication is Key

Communicators have for years now been trying to attack the problem of environmental degradation and human-driven global climate change on the social science and mass communications front. Collective communication is paramount to solving a problem that exists on a global scale. However, newer forms of media may not be bringing together people of different backgrounds and opinions as much as reinforcing media consumer?s prior opinions and beliefs about the environment.

?I think good communication is absolutely essential,? Ehrlich said. ?Unfortunately I think we are moving almost in exactly the wrong direction. Certainly the potential is there with new media, but now what that media basically does is let everybody listen to exactly their own opinions. You can pick a channel or a blog that will tell you exactly what you want to hear. We?ve got to fix that somehow.?

Ehrlich and his colleagues at Stanford University have started MAHB, or the Millennium Alliance for Humanity and the Biosphere. MAHB is bringing together researchers in the physical and environmental sciences with researchers in the social sciences and the humanities and arts, getting social science researchers much more involved in dealing with the human dilemma in global climate change. Social scientists, for example, conduct research into communications other efforts that can foster pro-environmental behavioral change in the public sphere.

Unfortunately, telling members of the public about the science of global climate change does not promote concern and pro-environmental behavior to the extent that some physical scientists might hope.

?We know that telling people the science doesn?t get behavioral change,? Ehrlich said. ?But the social scientists know about what does get behavioral change.?

According to Ehrlich, the set of environmental problems that we face today is the perfect storm of problems. Global climate change will have severe impacts on natural resources and our way of life if people from many different backgrounds aren?t brought together to help solve these problems. And what else can we use to bring people together but effective communications strategies?

But these strategies may not be as straightforward as they seem, requiring new and creative thinking to bring key publics to a place of environmental concern. The mass media certainly does not have a good track record in pro-environmental communications, failing to ask and discuss key ethical environmental and global governance issues in the public sphere.

?We are trying to stir that up, but it?s a tough job,? Ehrlich said. ?The MAHB is a first attempt to get everybody together, to give a common platform. Who knows whether it will work. It just seems worth trying.?

Only together, in a state of social equality and tied together with effective communications strategies, pro-environmental educational programs, and a media not afraid to treat global climate change and other environmental problems seriously, can we achieve change on a societal level. And, personally, I hope that change will look like the sustainability we so dreamily value.
