Landon: School Bus Strike On; Union: Talks Continue
By James Lomuscio
UPDATE Westport Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon said today a strike by school bus drivers is on for Monday after drivers rejected a proposed settlement. But a union representative said talks are continuing this afternoon to avoid a walkout.
?It is with regret that I must inform you that the Dattco bus drivers, late this morning, voted to reject the contract settlement that was agreed upon by Dattco management and the union leadership,? Landon said in an e-mail to parents. ?Therefore, bus transportation will not be available for our students on Monday.?
However, the union said both sides were meeting again this afternoon in a last-ditch effort to avoid the strike.
?Both parties met last night at the Holiday Inn in Bridgeport and did not leave until 5:45 a.m. today,? said Tom Wilkinson, president of Local 371 of United Food and Commercial Workers. ?The contract was rejected and a strike was authorized.?
