Joint China-US naval exercises set at Pearl Harbor

Chinese navy ships will steer into Pearl Harbor next month as part of a joint search-and-rescue training exercise with the U.S. military.

Three People's Liberation Army ships will visit beginning Sept. 6, including a guided missile destroyer, a frigate and a supply ship. The Honolulu Advertiser reports (http://bit.ly/16J7Dhp ) that the USS Lake Erie will act as a host ship for the mission.

While details aren't set, Capt. Darryn James of the Pacific Fleet says sailors will conduct an at-sea search-and-rescue exercise.

James told the newspaper that the joint exercise shows a commitment to improved safety across the region.

Analysts say China is seeking more stability in its relationship with the United States.

It has been seven years since Chinese navy ships visited the port.
