Official: Gunmen kill 20 in north Nigeria village

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Gunmen suspected to belong to a violent robbery gang raided a remote village in northern Nigeria, killing 20 people in an attack highlighting the growing insecurity in the nation, an official said Wednesday.

The assault happened Tuesday morning before dawn in Kabaru, a village near other towns in Zamfara state that were recently attacked by the gang, state spokesman Nuhu Anka said. The gunmen shot dead most of those they found in the village, then later "slaughtered" the local village chief in a brutal machete attack, Anka said.

Police have begun an investigation into the attack, he said. The assault appeared to be the work of a violent gang blamed for several mass casualty attacks in the region in recent months. In June, gunmen killed at least 27 people in Zamfara state in attacks on villages preparing for a local market day. Earlier in October, gunmen armed with assault rifles attacked a rural village in neighboring Kaduna state, killing at least 24 people, including worshippers leaving a mosque after prayers before dawn.

"It looks like the same people because the pattern is the same," Anka said.

Officials said the Kaduna attack likely came after a local vigilante group in the community killed some of the robbers.

While police routinely have many officers stationed throughout major cities in Nigeria, police presence in villages can sometimes be a single officer working out of someone's home.

Meanwhile, Nigeria's Muslim north remains under guerrilla attack from a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, which has killed more than 720 people this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. The death toll has climbed despite an influx of additional soldiers and police.

The violence has embittered many living in the region and exposed the inability of Nigeria's weak central government to provide basic security in the nation of more than 160 million people.

No Comments - Horror Writers Association

I arrived at the Javits Center in New York City for the BookExpo?an oversized, rolling suitcase in hand to tote back all of those advanced copies of my novel that I would surely fail to give away. Inside, the Javits Center was somewhat aesthetically pleasing in that express, faux-luxury-hotel kind of way. Yet, mainly it was a beehive of suited and badged industry folks, shuffling as quickly as possible through the aisles and offshoots lined with publishers and author?s associations?some of which by this time next year will have gone under.

But book-signings aren?t supposed to be a time for pessimism and jadedness. I was, in fact, heading toward the Horror Writers Association booth for perhaps my only chance to autograph books for a captive audience. I had written a bloody, despicable, hilarious, trashy and pseudo-philosophical horror novel. Or, that was what my pseudonym whispered into my ear every night when I fantasized about characters for some newfangled fiction. ?Brilliant!? my pseudonym reassures me. ?Maybe just a little pretentious and deplorable,? is what I tell him with my thoughts, but someone has to reassure you when your chosen obsession is to make things up.

I digress: the Expo. I arrived at the booth quite early and had the chance to chat with my fellow HWA members. They, too, seemed like well-mannered men?not the types who yearned to terrorize their audience. Secretly (or not so secretly) I am compelled to titillate and frighten you, but with oddly constructed sentences; a narrative voice you can?t get out of your head; and the surreal, starkly imagined settings where anything can happen. That person named ?Leland? who, although not so brilliant, definitely has one foot inside a succubus? netherworld where:

  • The maps of a tormented cartographer erode physical reality
  • A rambunctious thirteen-year-old girl dies simply from the terror of her mother?s disappearance, only to rise from the dead having contracted autism after suffering through the paralysis of nonexistence
  • The conjoined-twin bloodsuckers who date back to the Civil War and?having forgone taking live victims?find redemption and God, form a Pentecostal church, and retrieve blood from their devoted congregants
  • And, this newly devised character of mine: in love with her voyeuristic psychiatrist, this woman firmly believes she is Sharon Tate and that she?s been pregnant for more than forty years

I continued to chat with my horror writer compatriots. Nice men, humble. And then, droves of people hungry for free books strolled by our booth. ?The Blood Poetry,? a woman commented. ?I don?t really read poetry.?? I responded, ?It?s actually a novel.?? I did, in fact, manage to autograph, give away, and pitch this small and murderous tale. I, too, didn?t look the part of the author of literary bloodletting: I normally go to hairstylists (no barber for this guy), wear those ?skinny jeans,? blazers, a pleasant smile, and can chat up most girls? mamas. ?Don?t sign my name,? some of the would-be fans instructed. ?Just sign your name.?? I thought this was odd, but someone told me that in the off-chance I would become an actual known?and recognized?human being, they?d be able to sell my identity on Ebay. I signed and signed. Was I even autographing the books in the correct place? I met a blogger; a publicist; a publisher who swore she?d read my novel and review it in her fabulous online magazine; a cinematographer attempting to drum-up business for authors dying to make book trailers; and a woman who was trying to pitch a ?Do It Yourself? MFA program.

Finally, I managed to give away all of my books. It was an odd feeling: there were now dozens out in the ether, but I wasn?t sure anybody would bother to read them. ?But that?s OK,? my pseudonym continued to reassure me, ?at least that suitcase is empty, right??? I?m not sure I yearn to be famous, per se. Well, that?s actually a complete lie. I?d like for you to be intrigued just enough to consider perusing the opening pages of The Blood Poetry?a novel for which I was hired to be a ?ghost writer.?? The actual author is my pseudonym, that other Leland, who?s always around the corner in the back alley of my other brain?his bloody mouth agape and begging for me to ?speak? for him. I do indulge him every-now-and-then. Yes, for the most part, BookExpo America 2012 was a success, and the other Leland thought so as well. Of course, I couldn?t compete with the other literary rock-stars at The Expo who, too, had written brilliant books to promote: Jimmy Fallon, Kirstie Alley, and Michael Bolton. I wondered if they had pseudonyms and doppelgangers who fed their delirious, mildly dangerous obsessions. I wondered what Michael Bolton?s doppelganger looked like. It?s probably just a replica of his younger self?twirls of long hair that draped past his shoulders, despite the bald spot on top. Did Kirstie Alley?s double run amok with her mouth agape, constructing the dazzling and red-hot phraseology of mad women?? The Javits Center and all of that expo mumbo-jumbo excited me for one afternoon. To the phenoms who traipsed through the catacombs of that edifice with great ambition on their sleeves: I was a literary compatriot with something big and bold to exclaim. They surely didn?t notice me?and may never discover The Blood Poetry?but for at least one stark moment while approaching sleep in the very near future, they?ll listen.

The Blood Poetry: An Excerpt

It?s home and the desolate landscape: couch, remote control, the mother vampirism hair particles in the dryer, the intangibles (e.g., dead spermicidal ideas, living-or-not, the soul of the refrigerator with the imagined heads of my undead mother?s defiled, the lists, the watches that stopped working in my childhood, the britches, a humming that never goes away because I?m deaf to love, my wife?s ankles that I desire, my nightmares, memories of the pillow cases I came on, the other things and, oh yeah? , that).? Sylvia bobbles over to the kitchen table and lights a cigarette.? She smokes?? Since when?? Do I enable this behavior?

?Please don?t smoke in my house, daughter.?

She ashes into a flower pot with a dead plant in it.? Where, forever, there are dead things waiting to be revived.? I mean, the damned buds had souls too, you know!

?Did you guys stop having sex or something?? she asks.? ?Did you cheat on her??

Bang, bang, the upstairs vampire lurks like a debauched bed sheet, floating into the walls, into the door, listlessly armoring herself against the living.? Ah, the living.

I avoid her question and look at her.

?Just don?t smoke in my bedroom, OK??

?I?d never go in there.? The place freaks me out.?? She nods her head like she?s falling asleep, but I see she?s got the phone next to her, waiting to call whomever will fetch the wished-for wife.? My Sylvia, the antidote for all things undead.

?Mom wouldn?t leave me, Papa.? I mean, she had her books and things, her fantasies.? You know what she used to tell me when I was little??

?That I was a bad father.?

?No.? That she was royalty or something, but there?s no aristocracy in America, you know.?

I picture Abby in Sylvia?s bed, floating over the sleepy child, tumbling out fairy tales of her unknown life.? Abby had listless, brown hair and a puckery grin.? She mumbled when she spoke and everything sounded like cotton, but she made you laugh nonetheless.

I pace and pace.? I could go on like this for hours staring at the daughter, Sylvia, stammering for the right thing to say, what to wear to her funeral, to breathe the right air, to blemish her with a kiss.? It?s a stifling, hot beast in this house.? Maybe I should crash the car through the front window for some god damned ventilation. ?My life needs a good airing.? The pieces of the puzzle are before you, my dears, you just need to connect the dots.? The dots!

?I swear she?ll come back, Sylvia,? I say, not meaning it at all.? ?She loves you more than she loves the rest of us humanoids. ?We are just place holders in her life, while you, well, you?re a whole friggin book.?

She picks up the phone, puts it down, looks around, sniffles, picks up the phone, dials, hangs up, sniffles, takes a drag on the cig, ashes it in the dead flower pot, looks up toward the vampire banging somewhere upstairs in flight, puts the phone down, dials, then dials.

?Shit,? I mutter.? ?She?s done it.?

?Hello, yes, I?d like to report a missing person.?? She takes a stifling drag on the cig, etc., and penetrates the receiver with her womanly voice.? ?It?s my mother.? She hasn?t come home since last night and it?s not like her . . . I haven?t seen her today . . . I don?t know how old she is, uh, maybe thirty-six or whatever . . . can?t you just send someone over here quick and get helicopters and horses and rile the troops to find my mother? . . . my dad thinks it?s drugs, but I think that?s a lie, but what does that have to do with anything? . . . it explains nothing, just come over, I?ll give you the address, my father is here, but he?s in some kind of trance . . . he?s always like that, like my whole life.?

She hangs up after giving the cops our address.? ?They?re coming,? she says.

?For real?? Like real friggin cops??

I pace, I stammer, my voice trembles on the femurs of the world, I punctuate a thought I want to deliver to the daughter, but I can?t remember what I?m about to tell her?my entire life story, it is.

We stare at each other.? I look at the floor.? I pick up a dirty pot on the stove, put it back down, pick it up again, I walk to the sink and turn on the faucet, off, then on, then check if the water is warm, then take a sip, then think, think!? ?You?re mother was very sick, you see.?

?What are you saying??? She hunkers as if this would get her closer to me.

?She had secretions.?

?Why are you speaking about her in the past tense??

?Well, if she were here, I?d say is, but I choose to say was, for no purpose whatsoever but to . . . to, to just say some friggin thing!?

?Don?t get mad.?? She sucks on the last of her cig.? She stands up, walks over to me, to me, and hugs my torso.? She smells like female deodorant and smoke and I get squeamish, but I let her do it.? ?What do you mean by secretions??

?Well, you know, a female thing,? I say.

?You mean, a period??

?Is that what you call it??

?Are you ten or something??

?No, but,? and she doesn?t understand the lure of it all, the sampling of ooze that can drive a vampire insane, the blistering of the mind, ?it was just secretions, OK??

?I don?t get it,? she says.

?I just wish I could see her right now.?

She unhugs me and lights another cigarette.? ?You don?t make any sense.?

She reaches in my back pocket, her palm up against my butt, and pulls out an apple core.? ?Why do you have an apple core in your back pocket??

?Your mother used to eat those apples.?

Sylvia puts the core in the garbage, then sits.

And then I remember the cops are coming.? ?Friggin fucking mother humpers!? The cops?ll be here!? You get your poor dad all riled up with the cops coming to our house!? Do you realize what we?re hiding upstairs??? Then I know I have said too much.

Discovery of lymph node-like structures furthers evidence that personalized immunotherapy is a possibility for certain cancer patients

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center have discovered a unique immune gene signature that can predict the presence of microscopic lymph node-like structures in metastatic melanoma. The presence of these immune structures, the researchers said, appears to be associated with better survival and may indicate the possibility of selecting patients for immunotherapy based solely on the immune-related makeup of their tumors as an approach to personalized medicine.

The study appears in Scientific Reports, a journal from Nature Publishing Group.

In this study, the researchers analyzed a 12-chemokine gene expression signature across nearly 15,000 distinct solid tumors of different types, including metastatic melanoma. Chemokines are powerful immune system molecules known to be important in lymph node formation and function during development. The 12-chemokine gene expression signature was found to remarkably predict the presence of microscopic lymph node-like structures within some melanomas and was also associated with better overall survival of these patients.

The researchers speculate that the lymph nodal structures they identified are active and playing an important positive role in a self-elicited (endogenous) anti-tumor response initially locally and then systemically. They also anticipate that their findings in melanoma may extend to other solid tumors, such as those of colorectal, lung and ovarian origin.

"We believe this gene expression signature reveals information on a unique anti-tumor response mechanism within the microenvironment of certain patient solid tumors, which may be their Achilles' heel to make them unusually responsive to immunotherapy and possibly lead to improved patient survival," explained the study's senior author, James J. Mul, Ph.D., associate center director of Translational Research at Moffitt.

Senor: Obama's Israel Attack 'Pathetic'

Dan Senor, a senior Romney adviser, says President Barack Obama?s criticism of Mitt Romney?s Israel trip was ?pathetic.?

Romney has been to Israel four times, Senor said tonight when speaking to reporters. Obama, he pointed out, has never been there as president. Obama?s posturing on Israel was thus a ?cheap shot,? Senor said, and ?sort of pathetic.?

?President Obama, as president, has been to over 40 countries. He hasn?t been to Israel,? Senor said. ?He can talk all he wants about how significant his trip was as senator. But for presidents, geography is policy.?

In 2009, ?[Obama] deliberately chose not to go to Israel,? Senor said. ?On that outreach to the Arab world, he could have hopped on a 30- or 40-minute plane ride and made it clear that he stands shoulder to shoulder with Israel.?

Senor, an expert on U.S.-Israeli relations, advised Romney during debate prep, and has been a top aide to Paul Ryan on the campaign trail.

Will The Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Tax Break Be Extended ...

Will The Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Tax Break Be Extended?

Will The Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Tax Break Be Extended?

With the election just around the corner, many homeowners will eagerly await a tax decision that will directly affect them. Many distressed homeowners continue to wonder if they will have the ability to short sell their home, obtain a loan modification with principle write-down without having to owe the federal (and state government) taxes on the amount forgiven.

The lame duck congress will need to make tough decisions that will affect millions of homeowners when they reconvene November 13. Come December 31, 2012 the Mortgage Debt Forgiveness Relief Act will expire. If that law expires, the millions of upside down and distressed homeowners could be on the hook for thousands of tax dollars? if they short sell their home or a bank forecloses on it.

Much of the discussion swirls through the chambers of the Senate Finance Committee which in August approved the mortgage forgiveness relief and other housing-related tax extensions that tie into some other laws so the question remains whether the extension of the tax law will be combined with some other laws or pass on its own.

If the law somehow does not pass through the Senate Finance Committee then the House has at least four similar mortgage-debt tax relief bills that have been introduced in the House. The various bills would extend the mortgage forgiveness relief from a minimum of one year through 2015.

The positive aspect for homeowners can be found in the fact that these tax bill extensions come from both party sides so Washington insiders and lobbyists give the bill extension at least a 60% chance of passing in some form.

The Best Of Arzachena, Sardinia: Villas, Restaurants, And Attractions

Situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea is the beautiful island of Sardinia. Villas in the area look out onto some of the world's most spectacular ocean vistas and countryside views. Unique and interesting in themselves, they are often only a short distance from nearby shops and restaurants. If you're looking for a villa nestled in picturesque countryside hills, but still with access to excellent restaurants and shopping, you might want to try Arzachena. With corner cafes, independent boutiques and charming old world squares, this town also offers excellent access to nearby beaches by car or public transportation.

Most people come to Arzachena for the famous pre-historic sites and monuments. So, while youre in and around the area, why not experience the charming restaurants and soak in the history of the area's many ancient buildings and sites?

Villas

For holiday makers looking for a retreat in a countryside location in Sardinia, villas in Arzachena offer beautiful views over rolling green hills and access to lovely relaxing walks through the fields and trees. Different from the newer builds that you often find on the coast, much of the accommodation available in and around Arzachena is in refurbished farmhouses and country homes - making them a unique and charming alternative to hotels, and set in a perfect location to enjoy the vistas of the area.

Dining

In Sardinia, villas near Arzachena offer access to some of the island's most delicious food, ranging from pizzerias to seaside fine dining. In the town of Arzachena, you'll find a couple of good Italian restaurants, serving up local favourites. A bustling and late night restaurant is Il Vecchio Mulino (Via Moro, 07021 Arzachena), which rumour has it serves up some of the most delicious pizza around.

If you're planning a trip to the coast, a local favourite is Oasi (near Costa Smeralda, Localita Riolta, 07021 Arzachena) with outdoor dining in the countryside. It's often bustling with food lovers from the area who travel there for their delicious fresh seafood pastas.

Historic Sites

Arzachena is home to some of the oldest historical sites in Sardinia. Villas and hotels often offer access to bicycles or give you information on car hires and public transportation, but most of the historic sites are available by foot if you're up for a walk through some beautiful country landscapes.

The Tomb of the Giants is an impressive Bronze Age burial and grave monument. It was built by the Nuragic civilization, which flourished in Sardinia almost 4,000 years ago. Much of it is still intact and is easily viewed from the road. Just follow Via Mascagni out from the town centre and it's on your left. You can't miss it.

Nuraghe la Prisciona is the remains of a Nuraghe village, with the ruins of a tower fortress. Follow Via Paolo Dettori away from the town until you find it on your right.

Chicken Soup for? | The Recipes Project

By Sally Osborn

Chicken soup is one of our modern panaceas for all ills, but it was also used as medicine in the eighteenth century. However, while nowadays it is associated with treating colds and flu (and has actually been proved to have anti-inflammatory properties), then it appears to have been considered as a stomach remedy. Take this rather graphic recipe from a collection of recipes by an unknown hand (British Library, Add 29,435):

An exelent chicken broath, from Mrs Finch

Take a lean chicken, skin it & draw it put one ounce of fine
manna in the body of it, & secure it at both ends to keep the
manna in, put it in one quart of water & let it boyl gently
till it comes to one pint, then strain it off, & drink a coffe
cup full at a time till it hath answered the purpose of giving
a stool.

Tis so very innocent a woman in child bed may take it
at any time or an infant. It is perticularly good to procure
a stool in the piles, or for any great heat in the body or
complaint in the stomach when such a medison is proper
as it also comforts the stomach & bowels at the same time it
works off & often proves effectual when all medisons have failed.

The manna in question wasn?t the wonder food of the Israelites, but the dried sap of the ash tree, which has laxative properties?

Mind you, I think I might prefer an alternative (and not so innocent) remedy for the ?looseness? or diarrhoea, from another anonymous collection (Wellcome Library, MS.1321)? although it does sound more like a hangover cure:

Take 6 spoonfulls of the best brandy & beat the yolk of an egge very
well & mix with it & grate in a whole nuttmegg & put in a little sugar
& brew it well together & drink it next your heart in a morning.

Apologies for cross-posting. This post appeared on my own blog Travels and Travails in 18th-Century England?(14 January 2011).

Chance of agreeing on Syria ceasefire small: Arab official

DUBAI (Reuters) - A Muslim holiday this week provides only a small window of hope for agreement on a ceasefire between Syria's rebels and the government of President Bashar al-Assad, a senior Arab League official said on Tuesday.

United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi has been pushing for a temporary ceasefire to mark the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha, which will begin on Friday and last over the weekend.

But Ahmed Ben Hilli, deputy secretary-general of the Arab League, told Reuters: "Until now the hope is weak ...

"The indications that are now apparent and the government's reaction ... do not show any signs of a real desire to implement this ceasefire," he said on the sidelines of a conference in Dubai.

"We are days away from Eid. We hope the situation changes and the government and opposition respond even a little bit to this door for negotiations."

Separately, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged the Syrian government and all opposition groups to accept Brahimi's proposal, calling it "a necessary step toward a long-term ceasefire and the launch of a political process aimed at providing for a Syrian democratic renewal".

Like Assad, Russia has laid most of the blame for the continuing violence on the rebels, who it says are aided by encouragement and weapons from abroad.

In Damascus on Sunday, Assad told Brahimi the key to any political solution was to stop the arming of the rebels.

Human rights activists say the conflict, which has drawn in regional and international powers backing different sides, has killed more than 30,000 people since protests against Assad erupted in March last year.

Dual nationality case: Legal hitch may delay Malik's disqualification ...

Senate chairm?an did not receiv?e refere?nce from apex court even after the lapse of one month.

Senate chairman did not receive reference from apex court even after the lapse of one month. PHOTO: FILE

ISLAMABAD:?

A legal hitch may delay disqualification of Interior Minister Rehman Malik for making a false declaration about his dual nationality in 2008, as the Senate chairman did not receive reference from the apex court even after the lapse of one month, The Express Tribune has learnt.

The court had decided the dual-nationality case on September 20 and it was perceived that Malik would be disqualified after a 30-day period, the deadline given to the Senate for sending a reference to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against him.

The Senate chairman will have to determine within one month after the receipt of a reference from the apex court whether a disqualification has taken place or not ? this was clearly mentioned in the ruling, but that didn?t happen.

?? a reference will be required to be made to the chairman Senate under Article 63 (2) in view of the provision of Section 99 (1) (f) of the Act of 1976, which lays down that a person shall not be disqualified from being elected or chosen as a member of an assembly unless he is sagacious, righteous and non-profligate and honest and amen,? the court order stated.

The court observed that at the time of filing of nomination papers for Senate election in 2008, Malik made a false declaration that he was not a dual national and was thus not disqualified on that account.

In view of the false declaration, he cannot be considered sagacious, righteous, honest and ?amen? within the contemplation of Section 99(1)(f) of the Representation of People?s Act (RPA).

?The legal hitch might delay the process,? an ECP official told The Express Tribune without giving any timeframe for the completion of the process.

He referred to an ECP meeting scheduled for Monday with Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Fakharuddin G Ebrahim and said the matter of Malik?s disqualification was not on the agenda.

Responding to a question, he said when there is a question about disqualification of a member that the speaker (of National or Provincial Assembly) or the Senate Chairman shall, unless he decides that no such question has arisen, refer the question to the ECP within 30 days and if he fails to do so within the stipulated period, it shall be deemed to have been referred to the ECP.

The ECP shall decide the question within 90 days from its receipt or deemed to have been received, and if it is of the opinion that the member has become disqualified, he shall cease to be so and his seat shall become vacant.

The ECP can act against Malik only after a disqualification reference is sent to it by the Senate chairman or getting clear directions from the SC as it was done in the case of former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani when the court had issued clear directions to de-notify him.

Has your friendship reached its expiry date? - Divas Inc. Magazine

Let?s be honest, we all have been through a stage in our friendships where we felt it was time to call it quits and go our separate ways. Ending a friendship is like ending any relationship, if not more difficult. We need friends in our lives but there comes a point where it might be necessary for you to end things. Sometimes you have to end some friendships in order to grow as a person because there are some people who are toxic and then there are those who just wear you down with all their negativity and victim mentality. I keep very few close friends and that?s a personal choice and over the years I?ve learnt that the best friends you can have is your family because at the end of the day when everyone else disappears from your life they are the ones who remain.

Friends come in different forms, for different reasons and not every friendship is close and meaningful. But a close and long-term friendship gives you an opportunity to have that someone to share your life experiences. Going through certain stages and moments together creates an intimacy that is not easily replaced nor forgotten. This is why it is very important for a close friend, to be more honest, even if it leads to a confrontation at times. Any relationship will have its ups and downs and even really bad times, but only by talking about what went wrong, and why, can you be able to repair it.

However there are times, when a friendship truly has a negative effect on you ? no matter how many times you try to ?save? it, you just can?t win. The kind of friendship where despite feedback given and hurdles jumped, they always end up undermining you or bringing out the worst in you. These are the so-called ?toxic? relationships that should be ended by all means. They will drain you, sucking up the emotional energy you need for other, more mutually satisfying relationships.

More often than not people choose to end the friendships by ?fading away?, by means of dropping out of sight, not returning calls and not making plans. The sad part about such a breakup is that it can leave the friend feeling very hurt and not knowing what has gone wrong in the relationship. How you end a friendship depends a lot on the intensity, value and length of that friendship.

Here are some things you need to think about before ending a friendship:

Don?t look for perfection

You can keep a friend who is great about certain things, but not about others. It is worth salvaging the friendship if there is just one area that is difficult. If you have to have perfection, you might end up with no friends at all.

Give them a chance to change

Sometimes your friend really has no idea that there is a problem, and if you don?t tell them, nothing will get better and then you?ll want out of that friendship. Give a friend a chance to make changes, by telling them kindly what is not working and what changes need to be made. They may really thank you later, even if in the short term it is hard.

Have a heart to heart

Someone who has been important in your life deserves a real discussion and real honesty. Both of you need to air your opinions and hear that you?ve valued the friendship you?ve had. It is the mature, adult thing to do and it will benefit both of you to have that closure. Don?t let your fears of confrontation prevent this from happening.

Eliminate toxic friends

A friendship should, for the most part, bring out the best in you. If over time and even with feedback this person brings out your worst or sucks up large quantities of emotional upheaval, then self-preservation comes first. Be clear, be honest and be firm. ?If you have tried talking and it?s a no-go, or if the person is not close to you or hasn?t been around very long ? sometimes the heat of a real breakup just isn?t worth it. It may be fine then to just ?fade away? and leave clear hints that you are not going to stay in the picture.

Gemelli Pasta with Lamb Ragu adapted from Michael Mina

???????? For all its popularity, ordinary supermarkets carry surprisingly few pasta shapes.? Granted, they do have a good representation of the types of pasta the home cook needs. But they never come close to the staggering number of varieties you?ll find at a pasta emporium like New York?s Eataly which is just across the street from Madison Square Park at 23rd?and 5th?Avenue.? The picture at left shows just one aisle of the store?s enormous pasta section!? How I took this picture with virtually no one in that aisle is something of a miracle.? Eataly, featured in this post (http://www.chewingthefat.us.com/2010/11/visit-to-eataly-yields-delicious-veal.html), celebrated its second anniversary just last week.? And there was a lot to celebrate. The 58,000 square foot store was on track to net $85 million in one year, which works out to $1700 a square foot!? That?s a lot of pasta!? And Eataly would be a good place look for the Strozzapreti pasta that Chef Michael Mina called for in his original recipe.? We were nowhere near Eataly when we decided to cook this meat-y pasta dish with its spicy overlay of cumin and fennel and red pepper.? So we substituted Gemelli, which are easy to find almost anywhere. They?re also an approved substitute for Strozzapreti, which translates, from Italian into English as ?Priest Strangler?.? Gemelli means ?twins? in Italian, so much less violent than ?priest strangler? don?t you think?
???????? Whoever invented pasta must have had a fine time naming the various shapes.?? They must have looked at the shape of the pasta and thought that one looks like a little ear (Orichiette).? That one looks like a butterfly (Farfalle) and that one looks like a Bridegroom (Ziti and I refuse to speculate why). It?s easy to see why Gemelli, which are two side-by-side spirals, are so named. But when you get to Strozzapreti which is shaped like a rolled towel, you have to ask yourself ?Was this some sinister pasta out of The Borgias????
? ? ? ? ?At the end of the day, all pasta is chosen because it is the most appropriate being used. Spaghetti, still far and away the most popular, is best for light sauces.? When you heavy up on the meat, pasta with openings and ridges and bowls like Rigatoni, Penne and Orichiette are best.? Cream sauces are paired with ribbon like pastas like Fettucine and Pappardelle.? ?And both Strozzapreti and Gemelli have long ridges along their sides ?which helps pick up more of the sauce? according to Michael Mina whose recipe we used. ???????? Egyptian-born Chef Michael Mina is well known in his adopted hometown of San Francisco. And why wouldn?t he be? He was just 22 when he helped design and execute a restaurant from the ground up.? That restaurant, Aqua, opened in 1991 and Chef Mina?s reputation as a great innovator and chef was born. ?After 20 years and a staggering 19 restaurants later, the chef returned to the site of his original Aqua and opened Michael Mina (252 California St. San Francisco CA Tel: (415) 397-9222.).? You know you?ve made it when your own name is the draw.? In his recipe for Lamb Ragu which came from Food and Wine Magazine, there?s a great balance between the richness of the slowly cooked meat sauce combined with the freshness of the cherry tomatoes, scallions and mint leaves that are added at the end of the preparation. And not to be forgotten is the grated cheese that used to finish the dish.? It ties the whole dish together using sheep?s milk cheese. ?There?s not a lot of work here and the two hours and fifteen minutes it takes to make are mainly in the cooking time for the sauce.? Here?s the recipe: Recipe for Gemelli with Lamb Ragu adapted from Michael Mina in?
Food and Wine Magazine This is listed as being for 8 servings.? Make a batch and freeze it for later use if you?re serving fewer people.

???? 1 tablespoon fennel seeds ???? 1 tablespoon cumin seeds ???? 1 tablespoon Aleppo pepper or 1/2 ?tbsp. crushed red pepper ???? 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns ???? 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil ???? 2 pounds ground lamb ???? Freshly ground black pepper ???? 6 large garlic cloves, coarsely chopped ???? 1 large onion, coarsely chopped ???? 1 large fennel bulb?halved, cored and cut into 1/2-inch dice ???? 1/2 teaspoon sweet smoked paprika ???? 2 tablespoons harissa ???? One 14-ounce can whole tomatoes, chopped, liquid reserved ???? 2 cups chicken stock ???? 1 pound dried?strozzapretipasta ???? 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved ???? 6 scallions, chopped ???? 1/2 cup thinly sliced mint leaves ???? Freshly grated sheep milk cheese, or?pecorino to pass when serving

In a large enameled cast-iron casserole, combine the fennel, cumin, Aleppo pepper and peppercorns and cook over moderate heat until ??????? fragrant, 2 minutes. Let cool, then wrap in cheesecloth and tie into a ??????? bundle.

Add the oil to the casserole and heat. Add half of the lamb, season with salt and pepper and cook over high heat, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned, 3 minutes. With a slotted spoon, transfer the?lamb to a bowl. Repeat with the remaining lamb.
Pour off all but 2 tablespoons of the fat from the casserole. Add the garlic, onion and fennel and cook over moderate heat until softened, 8?minutes. Stir in the spice bundle, paprika, harissa, tomatoes and their liquid and the stock. Return the lamb and accumulated juices to the ? casserole and bring to a simmer.
Cover the rag? and simmer over low heat for 45 minutes, stirring?occasionally. Uncover and simmer until thickened, about 50 minutes longer. Discard the spice bundle and season the rag? with salt and pepper.

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the pasta until al dente. Drain and return to the pot. Add the rag? and stir. Fold in the cherry?tomatoes, scallions and half of the mint. Season with salt and pepper; transfer to a large bowl. Top with the remaining mint and serve, passing the cheese at the table.???
