Kiszla: Sports fans ought to prefer Serena Williams to Tiger Woods

Serena Williams vs. Tiger Woods?

It's no contest.

Serena would kick Tiger's tushy.

As an athlete. As a role model. As a performer who blows away the competition.

Williams chases the 17th major title of her tennis career at the U.S. Open.

Woods has won 14 majors in golf, but not one in more than five years.

Chris Evert and Billy Jean King insist Williams is their sport's GOAT, greatest of all time.

Golf keeps clutching to Woods like a 5-year-old kid unable to go to sleep without a security blanket. It's kind of cute, and a little pathetic.

Why is America obsessed with Woods, while it seems to treat Williams as little more than a footnote to the NFL highlights?

Golf on television is an excuse for a nap. Tennis is all action.

So maybe it comes down to this: Sports played by women won't really be taken seriously in this country until the TV remote is finally wrestled away from the guy scratching his belly on the sofa.

After Williams had won yet another gold medal at the Olympics in London last summer, I asked her how it could be possible that a woman past age 30 might be entering the most dominant stretch of tennis in her life.

"I don't know," Williams said. "I just always give all the glory to God. You know, lately I've been focused on tennis, nothing else, no distractions, no life."

And then she smiled.

Williams is not as famous as Woods. Never will be.

Winning is the best revenge.
